Hi Stephanie!
I wanted to thank you for emailing back to me months ago about perioral dermatitis. My condition is FINALLY clearing up after months of trying so many different things, I wanted to share with you!
I did everything and nothing seemed to work - switched my soap, shampoo and toothpaste products to all natural, ate the AIP diet, cut out sugar, put oils/apple cider vinegar on my face....nothing seemed to work... (I can't do probiotics because I have severe allergies to them, along with antibiotics...)
But!
I read a blog post about another a perioral sufferer, and how she went to a naturopathy and got a food test done. Turns out, she had an unknown egg allergy. She eliminated eggs from her diet, and it cleared up.
All last year, I was so sick, and at one point was bed ridden. All the doctors ran a ton of tests, and said I was "fine", and told me I was just anxious, and it was all in my head. After thousands of dollars of doctors telling me I was crazy, and my perioral was spreading like like wildfire (it went from my chin and into my eyeball area), and trying to eat healthy on the AIP diet, I decided to try a naturopathy like from that blog post.
He ran a food test, and I had 48 food allergy and intolerances - All dairy, eggs, most grains and gluten (besides corn, rice and oats), tomatoes, mushrooms, coconut, tropical fruits, many nuts and seeds, vanilla, pepper...and the list goes on!
When I was eating the AIP diet beforehand, my perioral was worse because I was eating a ton of coconut (oils, milk) because I cut out dairy. I was also eating tomatoes, some nuts and seeds, eggs (I cut them out later, but I was eating a ton of eggs at the time)....and so on.
After cutting out all my bad foods, my face redness reduced drastically, but I was still getting some bumps here and there. Turns out, many of the "natural" soaps and toothpastes I was using after the switch has coconut in them (they are listed under the scientific name, or have a derivative of coconut.) I had to AGAIN switch my toothpaste (I just use baking soda and water), and switched my soap to African black soap, and found a shampoo that is working.
I am happy to say that my perioral is ALMOST all gone, it just takes a long time for my skin to heal, especially since my body has been so screwed up over the last year of being extremely sick. Also, I am 98% feeling normal inside - I have no inflammation and pain, which I was experiencing so much for a year.
I thank God everyday that I am doing better. I believe I had to go through this healing crisis to understand my body, and that God wanted me change my eating ways - it was like a wake up call.
Anyways, Thank you once again for your informative blog post! Every perioral sufferer has a different trigger, and mine just happened to be 50 triggers haha!
Attached, I am showing you before and after pictures, how bad my face was.
I find that I can eat raw honey, 2-3 fruits a day, a ton of veggies and 1-2 servings of meat, and eat my morning GF oats, or switch it up with cream of buckwheat!
God Bless! <3
